Can You Really Make Money Blogging? (Part I)

This question, quite possibly, might be the most widely asked question from moms who get into blogging. This may not be the first question that they ask, but at some point moms want to know if it's really possible to monetize their blogs. It's a question I began to ask within a couple of years of blogging.

Tell us how we can blog for money, Ana!

When I initially started blogging it was merely to provide myself with a creative outlet to express my thoughts. Writing has always been a passion of mine and since I had loads of time on my hands at that time - I was bedridden due to pregnancy - I decided to carve out a place in blogosphere where I could empty my brain of all the many thoughts running through it. It never dawned on me that other bloggers would find my writings interesting. Come to think about it, my ramblings were a collection of eclectic posts from a hormonal pregnant woman. How intriguing could that be?

Because I am an ~~extremely nosy~~ inquisitive person, shortly after beginning my blogging adventure, I became curious about the writing of other bloggers in the vast universe of blogs. It took only about an hour of traipsing around blogosphere to discover that this new world was immense and diverse and this completely intrigued me about its presence. I became hooked to blog hopping from this point on and within time I even courageously left comments, which lead other people to my blog.

So, your blogging story was cute, but what about making money??

I know you want to know the nitty-gritty and I'm going to get there. The truth is the answer to this question is multifaceted. Back to my personal blogging story: After becoming an active participant in blogosphere, I started noticing that people hinted at making money blogging. Of course this tickled my ear. What! I could do something I loved and get paid too?! Sign me up for this gig quick and I'll take that paycheck with at least 3 zeros on the end of it!

I began paying close attention each time I heard a whispering voice about mom bloggers making money. But soon discovered that those blogs that were making money had something big that mine didn't have - huge followings. Despite the fact that my blog lacked the necessary traffic, I still didn't loose hope in finding ways to monetize my blog. However, in time I realized that it wasn't so important to concentrate on making money on my blog, but instead it was more important to concentrate on content and defining my brand. Defining your brand? What do you mean by that, you may be asking?

Content, brand...yeah it sounds good. But are you saying you can't make money in blogging?

No, not exactly. Actually, I'm not saying that at all. Since I'm sure you're dying to know, I have made money blogging. What I brought home certainly didn't put me in the ranks of top mom bloggers - far from that. However, in the best case scenarios I brought home enough to pay a car note - say around $200 a month. Here's the really kicker though... In my most profitable times (and I say that loosely since I never made enough to call myself a professional blogger) my focus was on defining my niche and honing in on content. Moms, the truth is you have to have a solid voice that is compelling and different to stand out. It doesn't mean that you have to talk about a topic no one else is talking about (Although, why not? There are loads of subjects to choose from.) However, whatever it is that you blog about make it "uniquely you". Share your about your passions, your experiences, your view and it doesn't matter if another blogger has shared something similar, we aren't carbon copies so if you speak from your experience it immediately becomes exclusive. You don't have to write like a Huffington Post editor, but at least proofread your work and gosh-darn-it use spell check. Ok. Ok. Ok. So I need to take my own advice on the last two. *jotting note to self*

5 Easy Steps To Improve Your Productivity

Being a work at home mom (WAHM) isn't easy. It's a constant challenge to juggle home and work since both happen in the same place - home. Reaching the ultimate work-life balance requires dedicated and persistent effort. In many ways work-life balance may be a greater undertaking for WAHMs than moms who work outside the home. Moms who work outside of the home have the advantage of leaving their work at their jobs. Learning to effectively separate work and family is vital to improving productivity.If you can boost the effectiveness and production of your work,it frees up time to spend with your family and it will also maximize yourbottom line. If you need help improving your productivity, follow these 5 simply steps:
Step 1: If Procrastination was a Money Maker We'd All be RICH!
It doesn't take effort to waste time. If procrastination was a money maker, we'd all be millionaires. Unfortunately, procrastination doesn't "a rich woman make" (and can actually put her in the poor house if she's not cautious). Therefore, the best way to combat a wasted day is with a well organized plan. I'm a huge fan of to-do lists and highly recommend starting your day with a to-do list that was created at the end of the previous day. I'll go into further details about that later on.
Step 2: I Bet You'll Find Some Lost Time on Facebook
Once you have laid out your plan for the day and you have determined what you need to accomplish, it's essential to remove distractions as much as possible. If your children are at home, this step will undoubtedly require thinking outside the box. For example: work when your kids are napping or during scheduled t.v. and/or computer time. Sometimes, you may need to rise early in morning before the kids are up to accomplish projects. If you are a night-owl, like I am, work can be done when the kids are in bed. Minimizing distractions with kids around requires creativity and forethought, but with a to-do list and a schedule you can manage your distractions. I'll bet you'll find a lot of your lost time in your Facebook, Twitter, andemail accounts. I certainly did! Log out of your social media profiles, turn off Skype, and put your cell phone vibrate. It's amazing how much you'll accomplish when you decrease social media distractions.
Step 3: Get to Work! You're On the Clock!
Now that your distractions are under control, commit a certain amount of time to completing each assignment. A great way to monitor how much time you spend on a particular task is with a timer. If you've determined that you want to work one hours on a specific duty, set a kitchen timer for one hour so that you don't spend more time on that duty than you want to. There's something energizing about forcing a time limit on a task - it gets the creative juices flowing and helps keep you on track so time doesn't fly away leaving you wondering where it was went.
Step 4: Deeeep Breaths In, Now Exhale
The flip side of procrastination is overworking yourself to the point of exhaustion. You do need to come up for air, take deep breaths in and exhale. Studies show that regular breaks are crucial tomaintaining productivity. If you are too tired, mistakes happen more frequently, your concentration level is much lower, and your overall production significantly decreases. There is nothing to be praised in missing breaks and lunch. While you may think you're superwoman for being able to go the whole day with no downtime, eventually your body will let you know that there isn't any glory in being burnt out.
Step 5: Close the Day Preparing for Tomorrow
As I mentioned in step one, I'm a big fan of to-do list. The last 10-15 minutes of your day should be spent in reviewing what you've accomplished and creating a new to-do list for the following day. If you create the to-do list in the process of analyzing what you did and did not completed that day, you'll have a more accurate to-do list for the next day. Doing this serves two purposes: first, it helps you to wind down your day and allows you to shed your work-mode so that you can get back to being Mom. It also helps you get a jump start on your work the following day. No need to putter around trying to figure out what needs to be accomplished - you've already predetermined that the day before.

As a WAHM I'm sure you've felt overwhelmed at times, downing yourself for not being able to figure out the tricky balance between family and work. However, if you canmaximize your productivity when you work, then when it's time to leave the work behind and switch your mind to family, it will be much easier to give your family the undivided attention they deserve.

The Gallup's annual Work and Education survey done in 2007 found that American workersreported spending an average of 46 minutes commuting to and from work ina typical day. According to their study, that means US employees were spending approximately 92 minutes per day round trip on the road and 460 minutes a week in commuting to work. That's 7 hours of commute time a week! And then we wonder why we never have enough time - it's being lost in trying to get to and from work! At times, all of us have dreamed of working from home. Aw the glorious thoughts of working in jammies, with a lap top resting on our laps, while lounge in bed. *deep sign*

In reality there are certain steps you can take to convince your employer to allow you take your position home. Let's look at the most essential steps:

Step 1: Be Certain that You Can Work Remotely

First and foremost you must determine if your position can effectively be done from home.
If your position in its current state is not be a good fit for working at home, can it be restructured to allow you to work from home?
Of course you need to analyze yourself to see if you have the self-discipline to work from home.
You must consider if you will permanently work from home or if you will only work at home a certain number of days.

Step 2: Acquire All Your Work from Home Facts

Research to see if a work at home program already exist within your company. Contact human resources to check into this.
Find out if there are other employees that work from home and get in touch with them. Discover how the began working from home and get tips and advice on how you can do the same.
Assemble facts about you and your position that will make a compelling argument of your trustworthy andself discipline to work remotely. Include facts about your performance reviews, how you will continue to positively impact your team, and what can you do to preventproblems.
Compile facts about your employer and your industry. Offer suggestions on how allowing you to work from home will save your employer money.

Step 3: Create and Write a Work from Home Proposal

You must have strong evidence on how allowing you to work from home will benefit the company- (e.g. increased productivity, cost savings, etc)
What makes you qualified to work from home: your motivations, organizational skills, employment past, reliability, etc. How will telecommuting make you a better employee?.
Show that you have thoroughly researched the advantages of allowing you to work from home. Include reports that demonstrate how allowing employees to work remotely make them more productive or how it saves companies money.
Expect objections and concerns; be prepared for them. Concerns such as the security of your computersystem, (anti-virus software, etc), other people having access to your computer, confidentiality of work information, distractions at home, being reachable for meetings or calls, may be raised by your employer.
Provide the option of working from home temporarily, on a trial basic, so that your employer can monitor if this is a good solution.

While the idea of working from home is very enticing, not everyone is cut out for challenges of doing so. Before, making that leap to sell the idea to your employer, be sure you have a strong argument for your case. Simply using reasons such as long commute time will not be adequate. You knew when you took the job how long it would take you to get to work and back. It is not your employer's responsibility to accommodate you for this burden. However, if you can make a compelling case about increased productivity and cost-savings, then you may have a very strong case. Good luck in your efforts to take your job home!

Do you think this car would qualify for renting? lol

It's become a popular way for car owners to make extra money. And judging by the increase in demand and the number of new companies taking on this venture, automobile owners leasing their personal vehicles is a rising business. Spride Share, an individual car-sharing network, began operations in San Francisco in January 2011. After a pilot period with this program, Spride Share went into full blown operations because this creative idea became popular among car owners wanting to help pay for the high price of vehicle ownership in the Bay Area.

Stride Share has partnered with City CarShare, thus making their cars available to over 13,000 screenedCity CarShare members. Hardware is installed in each vehicle that monitors usage andallows renters access through an electronic key fob. Each owner can determine whenhis/her vehicle is available. Rates are designated based on the vehicle: economy,premium, specialty, luxury. Beaters are not allowed.

A Honda Pilot SUV might garner $9/hr, while a current model Toyotal Corollacould lease for approximately $7/hr.Owners will walk away with about 40% of the leasing charges. Spride Share estimates thatsedan owners leasing their vehicles for about 15 hours weekly could typically earn approximately$2,200 yearly; with premium car owners earning about $2,800 yearly.

Another car-sharing company, Zipcar, boasts over 500,000 members and cars in 28 states and the UK. The biggest difference between Spride Share and Zipcar is Zipcar owns its 8,000 cars, but parks its vehicles in the neighborhoods and rents out tonearby members. RelayRides, has only been in business since June 2011 in Cambridge, Mass. Owners dictate theirown rates, although RelayRides suggests $8/hr for a current Civic, and up to $12 for an SUV. Relay gets 15% off the top, and also charges 20% for insurance.

Insurance is vital

Proper insurance is absolutely vital in car-sharing networks. Spride, RelayRides and Getaround provide additional coverage through national providers, that insures the vehicles and ownerin case of accidents. Renters are covered after a $500 deductible.

In many situations, owning a vehicle out right, as in having the vehicle paid off, is not necessary to leasing the vehicle out. Just an FYI: the income earned is taxable.

Should YOU lease your vehicle?

If you can overcome the fear of renting your vehicle to a complete stranger, then perhaps it would be a good consideration. Relay claims its top earners earn more than $600 a month. That's not bad pocket change for a vehicle that could be sitting there collecting dust and rusting. All members who rent in the car-sharing network are screened, and their driving records throughly checked. Addtional fees are assessed on cars that are returned late or dirty. Another great feature is the feedback system that permits owners to rate renters. After considering these things, if you still feel uncomfortable with renting to strangers, you can choose to only rent to friends and family. Most renters, lease cars for in-town errands and don't rent the vehicle for more than a few hours.

Itry to do one at least once a week. My favorites are the LeslieSwimming Pool Shops. I observe the outside, make sure there's no trashor debris and the sign is straight, then go inside and listen for musicand note how the store looks. It's the easiest $20 to $30 you can make.That's gas money.
I did another at a Dairy Queen where I got free ice cream and got paid, so you can't beat that.

Summer’s here and you’ve started making your annual checklist: Sunscreen? Check. Sandals? Check. Beach towels? Got ‘em. But while you’re going over the must-haves for the season, don’t forget the single most important thing your kids will need: something really great to read.

While relaxing on the beach with a good book is one of life’s most delicious pleasures, study after study has shown that reading is one of the most essential things that kids can do when school’s out. A 2002 report from National Summer Learning Association states that children lose approximately two months of learning over the summer, meaning that come September, teachers will spend those first few weeks re-teaching kids what they already learned the year before.

“Motivating children to read throughout the summer is essential to building lifelong readers,” says Carol H. Rasco, president and CEO of Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), the nation’s largest children’s literacy nonprofit. “And reading is the doorway to all other learning.” With that in mind, how do you convince your kids to build reading time into their summer plans? Fortunately, RIF has come up with a number of ideas to help you make this summer a season of reading.

· Combine activities with books. Going to a baseball game? Head to the library and check out a biography about your child’s favorite player. Is summer camp on the agenda? See if the camp has a blog you can follow.

· Lead by example. Show kids that you love to read by picking up the newspaper each morning or sharing about something you’ve read, and they’ll understand that reading is important to everyone.

· Relax the rules. Summer is a time when children can read what, when, and how they please. Don’t set any requirements, and don’t force kids to read something they’re not interested in.

’20 in 20’ Campaign Sets Out to Raise Money for Hunger

Taste of the NFL has announced its newest initiative to kick hunger in the United States – its ’20 in 20’ campaign. As a launching pad for its 20th season, TNFL is asking people to go online (www.TasteoftheNFL.com) by May 31 and make a donation to combat this serious issue facing millions in our country. The goal: generate 20,000 donations in 20 days that can be immediately disbursed to help feed Americans who have turned to their local food shelves for assistance.

According to the national office of Feeding America, donations to this initiative have multiplying effects. Every $1 donated helps provide seven meals for men, women and children.
“Hunger statistics are alarming in our country,” said Wayne Kostroski, TNFL’s founder. “Approximately 38% of all current food bank patrons are first-time visitors, which is a direct reflection of the recent economic conditions. They’re like many Americans – one hardship away from needing public assistance.”

TNFL’s ’20 in 20’ campaign will accept donations through May 31 at www.TasteoftheNFL.com.

The Target Summer Learning Tips are based on Search Institute’s positive youth development, resiliency, and prevention research. This research led to development of a framework entitled Developmental Assets which comprise 40 commonsense, positive experiences and qualities that influence the choices young people make and help them become caring, responsible adults.

Studies of more than 2.2 million young people consistently show that the more “Development Assets” young people have, the less likely they are to engage in a wide range of high-risk behaviors, and the more likely they are to thrive. According to the National Summer Learning Association, all students experience learning losses when they don’t engage in educational activities over the summer.

Most students lose almost three months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills over the summer months.
Low-income students also lose more than two months in reading achievement.

I'm not saying that your blog would qualify for these types of offers; then again I'm not saying that it wouldn't. Work At Home Wednesday - Jobs for the Disabled

Back in 2005 the IRS almost became our friend and nearly dropped their foe status. As surprising as this maybe (close your gaping mouth) the IRS collaborated with National Telecommuting Institute (NTI) and Alpine Access to offer work at home jobs for disabled citizens. Go ahead - you can applaud because they should be commended for this act. Since this effort took place, every time you call 1800-TAXFORM during the tax season it will be highly likely that the person on the other end is a work at home disabled agent.

In addition to NTI, there are a number of other companies that concentrate on work at home jobs, training and resources for persons with disabilities. The government allows persons receiving financial assistance from the government to supplement that income up to about $900. However, I would advise any disabled person receiving assistance to check with there local government to verify how much he/she is permitted to work.

Working at Home Is Good On the Environment

In a recent article I wrote about a growing trend of companies to outsource client services. As the worldwide economic continues to fall, employers are searching for ways to decrease their costs while continuing to increase employee productivity. Costs and productivity are the main considerations that employers have about homeshoring.

However, with the implementation of new tax breaks and incentives to employers that go green, many employers are encouraged to green up. Companies, that allow a portion of their workforce to work from home are actually helping the environment as well. Here are some reasons why this is so:

According to an article published in Elert Gadget, research conducted in the US found that nearly 33 million Americans hold jobs that could be performed at home. If these jobs were turned into telecommunte jobs the US could significantly cut it's oil dependency.
The rising cost of fuel and shrinking salaries often force employees to quit their jobs. If more employers would allow jobs that could be outsourced to be done from home, this could attract and retain talented employees.
Much of the communication and interaction between work at home agents and employers are done electronically. This helps save tons of paper. This reduced usage of paper makes a significant impact on the fight against global warming because, a single tree can absorb one ton of carbon dioxide in its lifetime.
Working at home also helps to diminish sick days. Employees that work from home are less exposed to illnesses that are passed around in the office. Less sick days means a healthier quality of life for the employee and increased productivity for the employer.

The short list above, provides just a few of the many reasons why working at home can be environmentally friendly. As more companies realize that outsourcing will reduce costs and help planet Earth, they will begin to increase the amount of jobs they offer from home.

The Manny Project

Have you met Manny? If you haven't, no worries because you will get a chance to meet him in a moment. Many of us know of a Manny or have a Manny in our life. You see, Manny is autistic. I've never met Manny, but I have a younger brother who is developmentally delayed. I've often wondered if he has autism. Growing up in Haiti, my family didn't have the resources or facilities available that could properly diagnose my brother's condition. My parents knew that he had a learning disability and that he developed later than most children. However, they didn't know why.

April is National Autism Awareness Month and in recognition of this important cause Mrs. Cooper Media started The Manny Project in honor of her son. This project is really a celebration to honor his life. Yes, he will always struggles with learning. Yes, he won't accomplish as much as other children his age. Yes, he will always find it challenging to do many of the things we take for granted. Nonetheless, Manny and all the children with autism and developmental disabilities are such amazing little people and wonderful gifts.

Here are a few statistics on autism:

The prevalence of autism had risen to 1 in every 110 births in the US
Almost 1 in 70 cases of autism are boys
Autism is "treatable" but not curable
Studies show that early diagnosis and intervention lead to significantly improved outcomes

Here are some signs of autism:

Lack of or delay in spoken language
Repetitive use of language and/or motor mannerisms (e.g., hand-flapping, twirling objects)
Little or no eye contact
Lack of interest in peer relationships
Lack of spontaneous or make-believe play
Persistent fixation on parts of objects

To Manny and all children with autism (and developmental disabilities) my brother Jonathan is so proud of you! He understands what you are going through. I bet just like him, you have a bright, beautiful smile, a warm heart and a spirit that doesn't give in easily. Check out my main man, Manny!

Bloggers Against Hunger - Women on the Frontlines

When I stumbled upon the World Food Programme's Blogger Against Hunger badge, I felt an immediate call to action. What moved me to join wasn't a warm and fuzzy feeling. There wasn't a soft emotional glow that illuminated my heart from the thoughts of women and children that could be save. It was for very selfish reasons I had to help. I needed to help.

The pictures of starving, deathly hungry children and families are forever etched in our minds from the moment we lay eyes on them. Dirty, naked, mal-nutritioned children with bodies so frail their rib cages nearly penetrate their skin. Their eyes are so deeply sunken into their faces it's as if you are looking through them into their inner most thoughts. These precious little children, hopeless and full of despair should be far too young to know the perils of life. And yet everyday they live them. It is their reality.

We've seen images of mothers hardly strong enough to hold their dying infant's body. With heart-wrenching determination they try to coax the nearly lifeless baby to take from their virtually non-existent, unproductive breast. You can see in the mother's eyes her desperate hope that even an ounce of milk might be expressed to feed her withering baby. She'd give her life to see this baby live. Everyday, these mothers stand on the brink of death giving the very last they have with an unrelenting hope that they may spare their children from starvation.

If you can visualize these imageries, then you'll have a deeper understanding about my selfishness and yearning to join Bloggers Against Hunger. I too have known this kind of misery. At one time I was so mal-nutritioned from lack of food it was questionable whether or not I would survive. However, I have a victory story that I share about in The Case for Transracial Adoption. Not every victory story will end in adoption, however. As a matter of fact, many victory stories end with amazing, sacrificial mothers defying the odds and breaking the cycle of poverty and hunger.

I have tremendous admiration for the mission of Bloggers Against Hunger. This community truly understands the power and the incredible role that women play in reversing the crippling effects of poverty. Through partnerships with events like International Women's Day, World Food Programme's blogger outreach is changing lives forever. Education is one of the most invaluable inheritances that we pass on to our children. In our home we stress the importance and priviledge that a quality education is to our children. It's important to us that they understand that education comes with a high cost for many families around the world where tremendous sacrifices and financial burden prevent millions of children from attending school.

Great schooling doesn't come without great teachers, however. While I believe that most teachers enter the realm of education to positively touch young minds, there are those that go over and above the call of duty. They aren't just teachers, they are life-changers. They impact their classrooms and arouse learning in a way that changes our tomorrow. Their ability to inspire our young lives to go where they may have thought impossible to go or strive to be greater than they felt was attainable, reshapes our future. These teachers are heroes in the classroom. Unsung heroes far too often.

Recently, The BlogRollers Media announced about their campaign with Promethean Planet, a global online community trailblazer that has transformed interactive educational technology. Promethan has a passion for what teachers do. Through some of the most innovative lesson plans and equipment, they are helping teachers to transport their classrooms into a whole new spectrum of learning.

The Trend Toward Homeshoring Client Services

"As companies continue to search for ways to reduce costs and increase customer satisfaction the homeshoring trend will remain an attractive option for many service providers." This was a quote directly for an July 6th 2009 interview with Arno Millenaar, Senior Vice President of Business Development EMEA from contact center services provider Stream.

What is Homeshoring?

The definition of homeshoring according to Dictionary.com, is "the transfer of service industry jobs to electronically connected home-based employees." Aka working at home or telecommuting.

Companies Making Homeshoring an Option for Employees

It appear that Millenaar was onto something very tangible when he made the statement above, last year. In January of this year, Choice Hotels International made plans to transition its Minot, North Dakota call center to a home based workforce. According to Mary Beth Knight, senior vice president, eCommerce and global distribution, ""While the decision to close the physical center in Minot by 2011 was not an easy decision to make...it provides the best balance of business continuity and operational flexibility, enabling us to preserve the strengths of our Minot operation while positioning us effectively for the future..." Knight goes on to say the home-based solution offers Choice Hotels Int'l the ability to meet its objectives while maintaining opportunities for its Minot associates.

JetBlue began its homeshoring program from the begining. They touted a 25% improvement in productivity from employees that were permitted to work from home. As of today, JetBlue continues to hire at home agents for their reservation department.

Another company that recently converted their call center to a work at home platform was Cigna Healthcare. "We met with them [Thursday] to discuss with them the fact that we are going to go from working in the offices on South Horton to a work-at-home arrangement," Cigna Healthcare Spokesman Joseph Mondy said. Mondy was recorded saying the main objective of this move is to reduce cost.

Why Homeshoring is So Appealing

There are is a very viable reason why companies are trending toward homeshoring. If you didn't think companies heard the consumer moans when they outsourced their customer service department to India, China and other Asian countries, think again. Companies did hear customers' displeasure in having to speak with a customer service rep with a foreign accent that was difficult to understand. Although, companies thought shipping customer service jobs offshore would reduce costs, they soon found out unhappy customers lead to big losses. 9 out of 10 customers that have a bad customer service experience will take their business elsewhere. In addition to taking their business to another company, disgruntled consumers will tell on average 10 people and half of those people will tell 20 more. This is a well known fact in word-of-mouth marketing. Homeshoring is one way some companies are able to minimize their overhead and provide a superior customer experience.

Is Working from Home Possible with Children?

I think one of the biggest challenges parents face when working from home is tending to their children and completing their work. Parenting, alone, is a full time job WITH mandatory overtime. You do not have the luxury of putting away your parenting hat like you can with other hats you wear. Can working from home really be done while children are at home?

The thought of working from home can be so exhilarating for a parent. The excitement of spending more time with their children can make a lot of parents leap into working from home without doing proper planning. What mom or dad wouldn't like to being able to speak to clients in your jammies or set their own work hours. However, soon after embarking on this adventure many parents find out how tough it can be.

What many parents don't take into consideration is how difficult caring for little ones and working can be. If your children are of school age, it's pretty simple. Once the kids are gone, parents can dive into their work and get lots accomplished. However, what's a parent to do when they have a toddler or an infant? The question then arises whether or not to put the child in preschool or daycare. Doing this might seem to defeat the purpose of working from home, if your whole reason for doing so is to be with your child.

Here are a few tips you can use to organize your work day with kids at home.

Work within your child's internal clock. Nap-times and bedtimes are great times to get work done. It may require adjusting your child's sleep schedule which might take some effort at first. The good news is that once your child is accustomed to the schedule (as long as you stick to it) you will find you can plan your day accordingly.
Work during the night hours or early in the mornings. Some parents are early risers and others are night owls. Usually, during these hours in the day or night your children are sleeping and require little care.
If you have a toddler who can be occupied for a little while with crafts, toys, educational shows etc, use these moments to maximize on getting some work done.
If you have a spouse or older child, plan your day so that you accomplish as much as you can when they can tend to the children.

Sometimes, after all has been considered you may have to put your child in daycare or with a sitter. Don't feel badly if you have to. Choosing to put your child in daycare or with a sitter for only a few hours while you work isn't counter productive to being a work at home parent. As a matter of fact, it might benefit you in the long run. You accomplish lots of quality work, uninterrupted for a few short hours, verses working sporadically during nap-time and bedtime. It's easier to be productive when can concentrate on work for a few good hours verses trying to produce work at short intervals throughout the day. Whether you choose to keep your kids at home with you or utilize childcare, working at home can happen but does require strategizing and forethought.

SAFCOL Gourmet Seafood: Yummy in a can!

Safcol seafood creations could really be called yummy in a can OR a pouch because they can be purchased either way. I'm not a big fan of canned tuna or salmon. I think it's because most canned seafood have such a strong fishy smell and taste, I get turned off. Therefore, when I opened the first of the two cans of tuna I was sent to review I braced myself for the pungent smell. Instead of being overpowered by the fishy smell, I was greeted with the pleasant aromas of basil, tomato and other fresh herbs.

I had some bagel chips handy so I loaded one with Safcol's Light Tuna with Oven Dried Tomato and Basil. I added a pinch of salt and pepper and it was simply delicious. The refreshing blend of herbs, tomato and tuna marry so well and it's light flavor doesn't leave an after-taste in your mouth. I really enjoyed it.

I was also given tuna with lemon and pepper to try as well and once again I was pleasantly surprised with the zesty, vibrant flavor that didn't overwhelm. As for Tiger, the effects weren't as significant, but I still noticed some improvement in the dryness on his hair. I found with Tiger, conditioning his hair an extra 10-15 minutes resulted in even greater results.

REPOST: Reynolds Wrap 100% Recycled Foil Review

When I was contacted to test and review Reynolds Wrap® Foil, made from recycled aluminum, I quickly obliged. I have seen their commericals for this new foil quite a few times. I am completely behind major Fortune 500 companies jumping on the "go green" bandwagon. However, I will admit to a tap bit of scepticism when I hear of products that once weren't eco-friendly, all of sudden becoming eco-friendly. There is a lot of green-washing going on and this practice is on the rise as consumers are demanding environmentally safer products.

I had some questions that I wanted answered when I tested this product to see if it really qualified to be called green:

What percentage of the new recycled aluminum foil is made from post consumer/industrial materials? 100% of the product is made from post consumer/industrial materials. Examples of some of the materials used to make the foil are stadium seats, automobile components, cookware, gutters and siding and scraps from industrial cable.

Okay, so Reynolds Wrap® has made a remarkable effort to reduce an impact on the environment with their foil, but how about the packaging? The paperboard used to package the foil is made from 100 percent recovered paper that is diverted from the solid waste stream, collected, separated, cleaned and recycled for use. The inks used for printing are water-based inks which are healthier on the environment than oil based which does not absorb in our soil.

Reynolds Wrap® seems to have taken some good steps to reduce their carbon impact. However, how durable and strong is this new recycled foil compared to the old product? I can attest from a first hand experience that new Reynolds Wrap® new 100% recycled foil has the same strength and durablity as the former foil.

I am always on a quest to find products to use on my family that are natural and healthier for them.

When the wonderful ladies of Blogroller Media provided the opportunity to review beauty products from Carol's Daughter, there was no question that I was in!. Why was I so excited to try these beauty products? There were two distinct reasons for my enthusiasm. Firstly, Carol's Daughter is ALL about natural, pure ingredients for a healthier, vibrant you. Secondly, these products commemorate the debut of Disney's Princess and the Frog movie.

I received 3 body & bath products that were beautiful decorated with images from Disney's Princess and the Frog movie. The package contained bubble bath, shampoo and conditioner. A little FYI, if you are interested in these products, go buy them now because they are a limited addition product!

Although, these products are geared toward little princesses, I tried them on my youngest prince. The Magical Beauty Collection gift set is worth the $24 price tag. You do not have to purchase the set as a whole and can purchase each product separately if you chose. The prices run from about $8-$10 a product.

I'm not big on strong, overpowering scents and fragrances. We use scentless products around here. A bold fragrance doesn't not equal better clean and can actually have an adverse affect on sensitive skin. Therefore, I was pleasantly surprised that Carol's Daughter products have a light and airy scent appeal. Carol's Daughter prides itself in bringing to the consumer products that are paraben free, wrapped in environmentally friendly packaging and printing and that aren't tested on animals.

Beyond the beauty of the products, is the wonderful significance the collaboration of Carol's Daughter and Disney's Princess and the Frog yields. Carol's Daughter is a highly recognized brand by a mega-sistah. It's a beautiful things to see young, successful woman of color grabbing opportunity by the bull horn and refusing to let go until she's obtained every ounces of success out of it that she desires. Disney has clearly recognized this in Carol's Daughter and felt it would be an amazing opportunity to join the two great forces so little girls of color can have something they feel is kinda just for me. Go over to Carol's Daughter and get some just for me products. Disney understands about just for me. That is why they created the Princess and the Frog, where the princess was surrounded by jazz beats, gospel sounds and cajun spice. You better go get yours and see this movie!

Hi, I'm new to your blog. Tell me a little bit about you.

I'm Ana, aka Quiskaeya, (pronounced kiss-kay-ya) and you've come to my review blog. I used to mix my writings about my adventures in motherhood and my product reviews over at Quiskaeya, but the time has come to separate the two. I want to keep my writings about being a parent pure, simple, and clear of distraction from the brands I work with and PR related interactions. Similarly, I want my reviews and brand/PR connections to remain uncluttered from the rants and joys of being a parent.

I'm interested in having my product(s) reviewed for a fair and honest opinion. Do you do that?

I'd be happy to do that for you...maybe. I make no apologies for not completely saying "yes" to all requests for product reviews. Although, I consider it an honor that you would approach me for an opinion of your product, I must be selective. Firstly, I have received review requests for questionable and inappropriate material. Secondly, I am a mom blogger. The audience that I primarily reach reflects my interests and tastes.

So, what kind of products will you review?

I am interested in reviewing family-friendly products. Specifically, if your product is for parents with toddlers to elementary age kids I will certainly consider your product. Furthermore, I have a passion for going back to the basics. As I describe myself, "I am a pale green, semi-crunchy mama." If you have "green" products that would be of interest to families, shoot me an email and lets see where it goes. In essence, if you have a book, toy, educational item, electronic gadget, food, clothes (preferably for boys), household item, online resource, travel, etc that would appeal to families, I'd be happy to consider your product. My crux is Simply. Honest. Product Reviews. It doesn't get any easier than that. This being said, I will only review products that I have an interest in and that I feel can be promoted with little inconvenience. I am committed to bringing my readers the most wholesome, quality, products. I am a semi-crunchy Mama so beyond simply introducing my audience to innovative products, I give particular attention to brands with an eye on sustainability. It is at my discretion whether or not I will accept or decline any offers made to do a review.
